Oily and Acne Prone Skin

Oily skin is due to excessive sebum production by sebaceous glands. This is related to levels of DHT (a testosterone metabolite) in the skin.

In the right amount, sebum hydrates the skin and hair, while excessive sebum can be uncomfortable, cosmetically unpleasant (shiny, greasy look) and contribute to acne flare ups. The most common area of complaint is the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin), which is the area with the most sebaceous glands.

Several lines of treatments are available:

  1. IPL
  2. Spectra – reduces sebaceous gland activity and pore size
  3. Chemical Peel – particularly those with contain salicylic acid are useful
  4. Intradermal Botox – reduces sebaceous gland activity and pore size
  5. Appropriate medical grade topical products e.g. alpha-hydroxy acid products, retinoids
  6. Prescribed oral medications (e.g. Roaccutane – appropriate if severe acne is present too)
